What Does Open Adoption Really Cost? Our Experience So Far
We’ve learned so much on our open adoption journey—and one of the biggest surprises has been the costs involved. If you’re curious or considering this path yourself, here’s a peek at what we’re navigating:
✨ Agency Fees: Most agencies charge $25,000–$40,000.
✨ Lawyer Fees: Legal help is essential, and we’re budgeting between $4,000–$10,000 for this.
✨ Birthmother Living Expenses: In some states (like NC), adoptive families help cover “reasonable expenses” for the birthmother. For us, that’s $5,000.
✨ Travel & Living Expenses: Depending on the state where the birthmother is giving birth, we may have to stay for a while after the baby is born. We’re planning for:
Lodging
Food
Diapers & baby supplies
Day-to-day costs
✨ Lost Wages: We’re lucky to have parental leave, but not everyone does. Some families have to factor in time away from work as well.
We’re sharing this to be real and transparent—adoption is beautiful, but it’s also a big commitment in every way. If you have questions or want to know more about our journey, we’re always here to chat! 💬
